Opticon, Japan's foremost manufacturer of bar code scanners, announces the launch of a ruggedised cordless bar code laser scanner featuring Bluetooth communication and HID and VCP USB communcation.

The adoption of Bluetooth as a means of wireless communication between bar code scanner and host PC by users who would benefit from cable-free scanning has been very slow - much slower than the rate at which Bluetooth has been accepted in other areas of day-to-day life.

The reason seems to be quite clear - most Bluetooth enabled bar code scanners transmit the scanned data via virtual com port (VCP) USB. This then requires additional software to be loaded onto the PC to grab the data and move it to the application where it is needed. This is quite cumbersome and acts as a deterrent for most users who aren't running a PC application specifically written to accept data via VCP.

Opticon has developed a Bluetooth hand held laser scanner that overcomes this by communicating using Human Interface Device (HID) USB - just like a normal bar code scanner, thus avoiding the need for additional software and complicated setup routines. In fact, simply scanning an interface selection code and a single MAC address bar code on the base of the charging and communication cradle will configure the new OPR-3101 Blazor system.

The scanner itself benefits from a drop withstand of 2 metres onto concrete and an IP54 rating - it is tough enough to be used in the most challenging of industrial environments. Being tough, however, doesn't mean that it is a big ugly lump of plastic in a garish colour. It has a sleek appearance that will also find favour in the style-conscious retail sector.

Of course, Opticon hasn't forgotten the basics either. The OPR-3101 Blazor is equipped with Opticon's latest high performance laser scan engine and comes complete with out-of-range data buffering capabilities for those that need it. A wireless range of 10 metres provides sufficient mobility for most scanning applications. Multi-shift battery life means that the device can be used in conjunction with a tool balance without the need to constantly remove it for recharging. Charging downtime can be reduced thanks to the facilty on the cradle to independently charge a second battery.
